Dry Eye Symptoms


A patient with dry eye syndrome may experience following range of dry eye symptoms, which can affect both the eyes:

  1. A burning, stinging, or scratchy sensation in your eyes, you feel like your eyes are being pricked and burning constantly.
  2. A scratchy or gritty feeling like sand in your eye can also be in the list of dry eye symptoms.
  3. Dryness, grittiness, and soreness prevail in the eyes from long time.
  4. Straggly mucus in or around your eyes due to that eyelids often stick together when waking up in the morning.
  5. Photophobia or sensitivity to light might occur in dry eye syndrome.
  6. Dry eye symptoms also include the redness of the eye and light sensitivity, increasing painful eyes, aching sensations and deterioration of eyesight.
  7. A strong sensation of having something in your eyes or a feeling of minute particle in the eye is a major dry eye symptom.
  8. Difficulty or pain in wearing the contact lenses can also be the dry eye symptom.
  9. Difficulty with driving while nighttime.
  10. Watery eyes, which is the body's response to the irritation of dry eyes
  11. Blurred vision, especially at the end of the day
  12. There are layers of mucus in or around your eyes.
  13. Problem of irritating eyes. This is especially when you are in the wind or near cigarette smoke that is eye sensitivity to smoke or wind.
  14. You have huge amount of tears in your eyes.
  15. There is a difficulty in keeping the eyes open for a longer duration of time.
  16. Dry eye patient often undergoes the problem of fatigue after reading, writing even for a short time.
  17. There might be a problem of double vision.
  18. Dry eye symptoms also include dryness sensation, heavy eyes, fatigued eyes, and sore eyes.
  19. Eyes are itchy most of the times.

Another major common dry eye symptom is a foreign body sensation — the feeling that sand or some other particle or material is in your eye which can cause the inflammation and severe damage to the surface of the eye. Some people may find the pain very strong, and this can lead to frustration, anxiety, and difficulty functioning in daily life. If these symptoms of dry eye persists for long should be treated immediately as it can cause further complications which may include a worsening of eye redness and light sensitivity, increasing painful eyes, and deterioration of eyesight.
